How to use the new toolbar and insert elements
This program of improvements is currently in Beta and subject to change.
You may temporarily have a new editing experience while your teammates do not – we’re experimenting. How to manage Atlassian experiments
You can choose where your formatting toolbar appears: at the top, or in-line with text.
Published pages will automatically have the toolbar pinned to the top.
If you’re part of the beta group for live docs, your toolbar will be set to in-line by default.

Submit your feedback, providing as much detail as possible.
Select where your toolbar appears
When you select ...
from the toolbar menu, you can choose where you would like your toolbar to appear:
Fixed at the top, or
In-line when you select text
Fixed at top toolbar
Fixed at the top is how the toolbar has traditionally appeared in Confluence. When you fix your toolbar at the top, more elements such as media, tables, and emojis will appear.
In-line toolbar
For a more minimalist feel you can let it appear in-line when you select text. The in-line toolbar lets the formatting tools come to you, rather than having to scroll or move to the top of the page.
To select text:
Drag your cursor over words
Select the drag and drop handle. This will highlight text within a content block.
Use keyboard shortcuts:
Mac
Command + Shift + Left/Right arrow
Windows
Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right arrow
Your preference saves in Confluence
When you select where the toolbar appears, your preference saves within your given Confluence site.
For example, if you prefer your toolbar appearing in-line, this setting will be saved as you edit across all pages within that Confluence site. If you use multiple Confluence sites, you’ll need to choose your toolbar preference for each one.
Your teammates can also choose their own preferences which will save for them.
Search for or insert elements
Elements include tables, layouts, media, checkboxes and more.
Search for or insert elements by:
Typing the forward slash key “/” anywhere on the page
Selecting the + button that appears when you’re hovering over a content block
Start typing to search for what you’re looking for.
When you select ...View more
in the + or / menu, the element browser will pop-up. You can browse all elements and macros such as tables, charts, the date, and more.
