Configure sub-tasks
As a Jira administrator, you can create subtask work types to split up larger pieces of work into tasks that can be assigned and tracked separately by your teams. Subtasks are enabled by default; however, you can choose to disable them if your teams only need to work with standard work types. You can also create workflow conditions to ensure that all sub-tasks are completed before a parent work item can be resolved.
Enable or disable subtask work types
Subtasks are enabled by default. To disable them, you’ll need to convert existing subtasks to standard work types first.
Select , then Work items.
Under WORK TYPES, select Subtasks.
Select Enable or Disable subtasks as needed.
Create a subtask work type
Select , then Work items.
Under WORK TYPES, select Subtasks.
Select Add subtask work type.
Enter a name and description to define the new subtask work type.
Select Add.
Edit a subtask work type
Select , then Work items.
Select Subtasks.
Find the relevant subtask work type and select Edit.
Edit the name, description, and avatar as needed and select Update.
Block a parent work item workflow based on a subtask status
You can create a custom workflow with the Subtask Blocking Condition on the workflow transitions you want to block based on a subtask's status. This type of condition can prevent a parent work item from being resolved until all of its subtasks are resolved.
Select , then Work items.
Select Workflows.
Find the relevant workflow and select Edit.
Select a transition (e.g. Resolve) and select Conditions.
Select Add condition.
Select the Subtask Blocking Condition and select Add.
Select the subtask statuses (e.g. Done, Resolved) and select Add.
Delete a subtask work type
Before deleting a subtask work type, we recommend searching for all work items of that type and bulk editing them to select another existing work type. You can then delete the original subtask work type without affecting existing work.
Select , then Work items.
Under WORK TYPES, select Subtasks.
Find the relevant subtask work type and select Delete.
