Optimize work item security levels per scheme

The site optimizer helps Jira administrators identify work item security schemes that approach or exceed the security-level limit and remove levels that are no longer used.

A work item security scheme can have up to 50 security levels. If a scheme reaches the limit, admins can’t add security levels until its configuration is reduced. Existing levels and work items remain available.

This feature is available only on Jira Premium and Enterprise plans. Jira admin permissions are required.

To review security levels:

  1. Select Settings (), then select System.

  2. Select Site optimizer.

  3. In the Limits section, find Work item security levels per scheme, and select Review.

The Optimize work item security levels page shows each scheme’s name, associated spaces, limit status, security-level usage, and available action. You can also search for a scheme by name.

Select Optimize next to a scheme to review:

  • the number of levels in the scheme

  • the number of unused levels

  • the potential reduction

To remove unused levels:

  1. Select Review actions.

  2. Review the levels recommended for removal.

  3. Confirm the removal.

A security level is considered unused when it isn’t applied to any work item in any space using the scheme. If a scheme is shared, changes affect every associated space.

Schemes that aren’t associated with any spaces may be shown as ‘Unassociated’. Review their dependencies before selecting Delete.
