What is a temporary workflow?

To prevent problems, we turn off editing on workflows while we’re making updates to them. If the update takes a while, you may see a workflow with a name like Temporary workflow for 3 work types 22.0.2.2022 02:32 p.m.

We make this temporary workflow out of statuses from the work type’s old workflow and the workflow it’s updating to. During a workflow update, we may move work items from one status to another, and we use this temporary workflow to ensure work items don’t get stuck in statuses that don’t exist.

If moving work items complete without problems, we delete the temporary workflow and successfully update your workflow. Otherwise, you may have to try making the workflow update again to make sure your work items have moved to the right statuses.
